Waugh, Evelyn (Arthur St. John)

Novelista inglés. Después de estudiar en Oxford, emprendió viajes solitarios y contemplativos y escribió novelas que pronto establecieron su reputación como un consumado ingenio sardónico de brillante técnica narrativa. Sus novelas satíricas más logradas son Decadencia y caída (1928), Cuerpos viles (1930), Black Mischief [La desgracia negra] (1932), Un puñado de polvo (1934), Scoop [Pala] (1938) y Los seres queridos (1948). En 1930 se convirtió al catolicismo, y a partir de entonces aparece invariablemente reflejado en sus novelas. Después de servir durante la segunda guerra mundial, llevó una vida retirada y se volvió cada vez más conservador y misántropo. Sus trabajos posteriores, más serios y ambiciosos, pero menos inspirados, comprenden Retorno a Brideshead (1945) y la trilogía Sword of Honour [Espada de honor], formada por Hombre de guerra (1952), Oficiales y caballeros (1955) y Rendición incondicional (1961).
